Welcome to our web site!

On this website, you will be introduced to the principles of democracy and exposed to how democracy is used in the world today.

Democracy comes from the two Greek words “demos” meaning people and “kratos” meaning rule, so literally it means that the people rule. Democracy has had a long history of being an efficient and acceptable way to govern and was first utilized in Athens, Greece but was a little different from what is now considered “true democracy”. The word democracy is defined as: Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

In order for democracy to work there are certain conditions that must be met. The first one is that the people must be free to elect and have freedoms. They must be able to be available to different opinions (ie. Different newspapers). Also, there must be laws that set the state in order.

Canada's current democratic leader, Stephen Harper.
